Offline transcription comparison

Transcribe2Text vs MacWhisper: offline transcription for Mac and Windows

Both apps transcribe audio on your own computer. MacWhisper is a feature-rich Mac app. Transcribe2Text is a focused $20 app for Mac and Windows that takes you from an audio file to an edited, exportable transcript.

Transcribe2Text and MacWhisper are both offline-first transcription apps: your audio is transcribed on your computer instead of being uploaded to a transcription cloud. The real differences are platform, scope, and price.

  • MacWhisper (by Good Snooze) is a Mac app with a free version and a one-time €64 Pro license. It covers file transcription, meeting recording, system-wide dictation, speaker recognition, 100 languages, batch processing, and AI integrations. An iPhone/iPad version is also offered.
  • Transcribe2Text is a desktop app for Mac (Apple Silicon) and Windows. It does one job well: turn an audio file or microphone recording into a transcript you can check against the audio and export as TXT, SRT, or VTT. It costs $20 once, with a 7-day trial and no credit card.

On Windows? MacWhisper's website and Gumroad page list Mac (macOS 14 or later) and an iPhone/iPad version, but no Windows version. Transcribe2Text for Windows is available through the Microsoft Store.

When Transcribe2Text is the better fit

  • You use Windows, or both Mac and Windows. Transcribe2Text runs on Apple Silicon Macs and on Windows through the Microsoft Store.
  • You want a short path from recording to transcript. Choose a WAV, MP3, or M4A file or record with your microphone, transcribe locally, review while you listen, then save as TXT, SRT, or VTT.
  • You'd rather pay less, once. It's $20 one time for version 1 and every 1.x update. MacWhisper Pro is €64.
  • You need a transcript you can check against the audio. Edit timestamped segments, click any timestamp to jump to that point in the recording, and follow the highlighted text during playback. That's useful for interviews, research, captions, and the investigator workflow on our blog.
  • You don't want another always-on app. There's no meeting recorder or dictation tool running in the background. Open Transcribe2Text when you have audio, transcribe it, and get back to work.

When MacWhisper might fit better

We want you to pick the right tool. MacWhisper may be the better choice if:

  • You transcribe in many languages. MacWhisper lists 100. Transcribe2Text doesn't currently list supported languages on its site.
  • You need automatic speaker labels. MacWhisper Pro includes automatic speaker recognition.
  • You want meetings and dictation in the same app. MacWhisper records Zoom, Teams, Webex, and other meetings and offers system-wide dictation.
  • You process lots of files or automate your workflow. MacWhisper Pro offers batch transcription, watched folders, a command-line tool, and integrations like Notion and Zapier.
  • You work with video files or YouTube links. MacWhisper accepts mov and mp4 files, and Pro can transcribe YouTube videos.
  • You want a free version or an iPhone/iPad app. MacWhisper offers both.
